The Surprising Cost of AI: A Closer Look at Automation vs. Human Labor in 2024.

Here’s some food for thought when considering staffing and AI in 2024…

In a recent study by MIT, it was found that using AI is more expensive than human labor across 800 occupations. The study involved AI performing 1,000 visual inspection tasks and concluded that in most cases, human intervention was more cost-effective. Only 23% of tasks were financially attractive for automation. The study suggests that AI’s impact on job displacement will be gradual, and AGI (artificial general intelligence) is not yet economically viable. This challenges previous notions about AI rapidly transforming job markets.

This analysis suggests a need to reassess the economic viability of AI in the current workforce and prompts a reconsideration of how we anticipate AI impacting future employment landscapes.
