Data Breaches in the Philippines and Colombia

We often come across this idea that hiring people in countries like the Philippines and Colombia means putting data more at risk than having it handled locally – be it the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and others. This is a thought process that’s not normally grounded in research but more in presumption and stereotype.

Recently, Norwegian VPN SurfShark released their global data breach statistics, collecting information about data breaches since 2004. It’s a really interesting read, which shows the following results:

United States: 1,133 breaches per 100 people (up 14% from Q1 2024)
United Kingdom – 462 breaches per 100 people (up 24% from Q1 2024)
Australia – 520 breaches per 100 people (down 11% from Q1 2024)
New Zealand – 395 breaches per 100 people (up 36% from Q1 2024)
The Philippines – 115 breaches per 100 people (down 95% from Q1 2024)
Colombia – 148 breaches per 100 people (down 61% from Q1 2024)

While this is probably simplified considering the complexity of how, where, etc of data breaches, it’s interesting data that in some ways makes us second guess presumptions based on a country or region.
