The Curious Case of James Rodriguez (or How I Stopped Worrying When I Play For Colombia)

In the space of 2 months, how does someone go from being considered an overlooked ‘has-been’ for a club in a mid tier domestic league to being an absolute superstar and world-beater once he puts on a national shirt?

But it’s not just the last six weeks – James has a 10 year history of becoming something special when he puts the shirt of ‘la sele’, while interweaving that with an up and down club career widely panned by many critics and detractors.

I’m sure there’s many different reasons for this, but it’s undeniable that his affinity and connection to the shirt and team (it’s history, it’s vision, it’s values) is really strong. James proved this last six weeks he’s still got what it takes to play at the highest level, and is still one of the most gifted players of the modern era, all while wearing the tricolor of Colombia.

Maybe there’s something here about collective vision, values and reason for being. When we find the right conditions, and align with a broader history, vision, and values, we can become like James in whatever we do in life.
